U.S. News ranks School of Education, core programs among best in nation

Thursday, April 23, 2009 -

The UW–Madison School of Education is ranked seventh among more than 200 schools of education nationally, with seven of its core programs rated among the top three, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2010 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools.

The nation’s education deans, surveyed by U.S. News for the annual publication, consistently rate the School of Education’s core graduate programs among the very best.  In the 2010 edition, the deans ranked UW–Madison:

  • First in Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Psychology.
  • Second in Administration/Supervision, Counseling/Personnel Services, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education.
  • Third in Education Policy.
  • Ninth in Special Education.

Overall, UW–Madison is tied for seventh with Northwestern University, Johns Hopkins, University of California-Berkeley and University of Texas-Austin in the highly competitive top tier. The UW-Madison School of Education, which was ranked 12th last year, has consistently been ranked in or near the top 10.

“We are pleased to be ranked year after year among the nation’s best colleges of education,” says Interim Education Dean Adam Gamoran. “We are particularly delighted that our core programs continue to be regarded among the very best.”

Gamoran adds that the School’s excellence is reflected by many other indicators, such as service to constituents and the exceptional caliber of the School’s graduates. Serving and supporting education at all levels throughout Wisconsin and beyond is the School’s central mission, he says.

The U.S. News guide includes information about teacher education programs, which primarily enroll undergraduates, but the magazine does not rank these programs.

In previous years, U.S. News has ranked other graduate programs within the School of Education. Last year’s rankings included master of fine arts programs, based on a survey of art school deans and other top art academics.  Among the specialties, UW–Madison ranked first in printmaking and tied for third in metals/jewelry. Overall, UW–Madison was tied for 21st.

In the area of health disciplines rated by program directors and faculty, U.S. News last year rated programs in occupational therapy, with UW–Madison’s program, housed in the Department of Kinesiology, tied for 12th.
