Finding occupational science literature

Occupational Science Library

The library page of this site will have a searchable data base of occupational science literature. The library is currently under construction.

Finding occupational science in interdisciplinary journals

  • Occupation is of interest to many different disciplines: anthropology, geography, psychology, and sociology to name a few. Searching for research generated by these disciplines requires selecting discipline specific search engines.
  • Finding the right search engine is crucial to comprehensively gather research. Some search engines (OTSEARCH & CINHAL) are more likely to index journals that include occupational science and occupational therapy research. To successfully search for topics in occupational science and occupational therapy, select data bases that include the specific journals you are interested in. View the journal coverage of four common search engines and the journals they include in their index.

Searching Strategies

Using Keywords

The most effective searching occurs when you use the same key words that were used to index the articles. Use the help features of the search engine or ask a librarian to help you learn which key words will most effectively research your topic.

In interdisciplinary search engines, the key work "activity" will often bring up articles of interest on occupation but also require wading through many irrelevant articles. In these cases, using "human" and "activity" or the specific occupation of interest (such as "work" or "play" or "leisure" can get a more focused search.

Citation tracking

Once you find a current key article, review the articles that the authors of that article used. This will often lead you to additional resources. You should also search by the author's name to see if they have published any other research on the same topic.
