The Second Annual Spoken Workd & Hip Hop Teacher's Institute, winner of the 2007 North American Association of Summer Sessions "Creative and Innovative Program Award," offers attendees proven best practices from teachers and community activitsts across the country. Instructors and guest artists teaching in this course are nationally renowned leaders in their respective fields, pioneering the growth of cutting-edge multicultural arts educational approaches and opportunities.

Instructor:
Michael Cirelli is the Executive Director of Urban Word NYC, a grassroots non-profit organization that provides free, safe, uncensored and ongoing writing and performance opportunities for NYC teens (www.urbanwordnyc.org). He is also the Director of Program Development for the Hip-Hop Association (www.hiphopassociation.org), the leading non-profit presenter of hip-hop education resources for teachers and educators. He also teaches a course on hip-hop and literature at the College of New Rochelle. He has his MFA in Poetry from The New School, and is the co-author of Hip-Hop Poetry & The Classics for the Classroom (Milk Mug, 2004 www.hiphopintheclass.com), a standards-based curriculum that explores the relationship between hip-hop lyrics and “classic” poems. He was also featured on this past season’s Def Poetry Jam on HBO.
Martha Diaz is the founder and visionary of The Hip-Hop Association. Diaz is a Colombian-American social entrepreneur, educator, organizer and filmmaker with over decade of media and marketing production experience. She has a B.A. in Communications with a minor in Television and Film Production from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Diaz is currently working on her Masters in Education and is Co-Author of the forthcoming book, Fresh, Bold & So Def: 100 of the Most Influential Women in Hip-Hop.

If you wish to earn credit with this Institite, there is an additional cost of $562.52. In order to enroll for University credit, you must first enroll in the Institute. After you have enrolled, please email silet@education.wisc.edu for next steps. Housing in a private dormatory is available for $22.66 per night. Housing is in suites with two private bedrooms, shared kitchenette and shared bath. Bedding and towels are included. Please see the link above for the housing application form.
