Quilting Circles ~ Learning Communities Book

Arts, Community, and Curriculum Guide grades k-12

Description:

Dive into exciting hands-on visual arts, language arts, and social studies activities in this curriculum guide designed for grades K-12. Experience how quilts and quiltmakers can enhance learning across the curriculum. Discover quilts as a form of human communication and connection across generations and cultures. Each lesson was created for a specific grade level with extensions to simplify for younger students and to challenge older students. An accompanying CD-ROM includes support materials, worksheets, historic quilt stories with images, and a virtual quilt show.

The 2008 Dorothy Howard Award committee commented that Quilting Circles…”is a thoughtful, focused and well-balanced use of material culture resources and scholarship about those materials. This curriculum guide is quite thorough, relevant on a national (possible international) level and the tactile-ness of the project is both appealing and useful for teachers. Educators in a range of classroom settings will find the package of practical activities, culturally contextualized essays and the guides for further exploration and study a welcome and innovative addition to their own teaching toolkits. The most welcome addition of the CD allows the images to be projected on the wall, multiplying the possibilities of group discussions or large-scale patterns from which to practice sewing techniques.”
