Welcome to the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the only department solely committed to improving the lives of people with disabilities.
Our programs prepare graduates in entry-level and leadership positions to work with, or on behalf of, people with disabilities, their families, rehabilitation counselors, psychologists, and counselor educators; special education teachers and teacher educators; and rehabilitation and special education researchers.
The Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education would like to congratulate Chung-yi Chiu, a Ph.D. student in Rehabilitation Psychology, who has been awarded a UW-Madison Population Health Dissertation Grant sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholars Program.
Her proposed proposed research project is titled "The Health Action Process Approach for People with Multiple Sclerosis: Targeting Four Health Behaviors—Physical Exercise, Diet, Drink & Smoking." This dissertation will examine and explore factors in the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA, Schwarzer, 2008) in order to predict and modify the adoption and maintenance of health behaviors for persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). The dissertation will focus on identifying the optimal set of factors that allow for the best prediction, explanation, modification and maintenance of health promotion behavior.
Funding awarded from this grant must be used toward dissertation research, such as for a pilot study, data collection expenses, or other research activities related to the student’s work in health and society. Ms. Chiu will be required to prepare a written report and give a brief oral presentation at a campus-wide symposium in the late Spring of 2009. In addition, Her faculty advisor and the chair of her dissertation committee, Professor Ruth Lynch, will also receive $1,000 in research funds in conjunction with this dissertation grant.
