College Access Program offers students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are completing
their freshman, sophomoreor junior year in high school an opportunity to improve
their academic and college readiness skills. The goal of the Academic Skills Development
Workshop is to prepare students for college and assist them in identifying their
career goals. The program has been around for more than 24 years and has served
over 1200 high school students from all over the U.S.
Although topics change from
year to year, previous themes have examined issues such as stereotypes, world hunger,
mathematics in art, DNA testing, water quality, and emotion and the brain. Through
these fascinating topics, CAP participants learn problem solving skills using math
and science, experience college level writing, gain information on college admission
process, financial aid, and most importantly, get to know UW-Madison and its surroundings.
