UW-Madison's Clifton Conrad has written a book titled, “Educating a Diverse Nation.” He and co-author Marybeth Gasman examined a dozen minority serving institutions -– including historically black colleges and universities, tribal colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, and Asian American and Pacific Islander-serving institutions -- and found many practices at MSIs that are helping nontraditional students flourish. Conrad will be giving a free public talk about this topic on Thursday, April 23.

Jerlando F. L. Jackson will serve as the 2014-15 Michael G. Morris Endowed Chair at Eastern Michigan University. The Morris Endowed Chair is designed to help EMU better understand and improve the experience of black males on campus. The award provides up to $50,000 for outstanding visiting faculty. Jackson will remain in his posts at UW–Madison during the year-long special appointment.

Students from Michigan’s Farmington Public Schools, one of 28 school districts that are members of the Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN), drafted a resolution on social justice and civil rights and successfully secured its state-level adoption by the Michigan Civil Rights Commission on Jan. 26. MSAN is housed within the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) at UW-Madison’s School of Education. It is a national coalition of multiracial, suburban-urban school districts that have come together to understand and eliminate achievement/opportunity gaps that persist in their schools.

Student-athletes from UW-Madison’s Beyond the Game program will participate in the Saturday, Feb. 7, Science event in the Town Center of the Discovery Building, 330 North Orchard St. “The Science of Badger Athletics,” hosted by WARF and the Morgridge Institute for Research, will offer lively learning experiences related to sports and engineering, physics, physiology, nutrition and biology with assistance from “Beyond the Game,” the Athletic Department’s Office of Student Athlete Development , and the College of Engineering’s Materials Research Science and Engineering Center.

UW-Madison alumna Alicia Montague-Keels has received the 2014 Wisconsin Association of Foreign Language Teachers’ (WAFLT) Future Language Teacher Award. This honor is given to students in teacher-training programs who have shown exceptional promise and potential to become outstanding world language educators. She graduated from UW-Madison in May 2014 with a degree in Chinese Education and currently is pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania and is a fourth grade teacher in Philadelphia.

Upward Bound was one of the original federal Great Society programs of the 1960s and it remains the single largest college access program in the country. On Tuesday, Dec. 9, the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE) is hosting a webcast featuring Douglas Harris as he discusses his WISCAPE working paper that takes a look at the program 50 years after its inception. This paper is co-authored by Alan Nathan and Ryne Marksteiner.

UW-Madison’s Aydin Bal is the lead author of an article that appears in the latest edition of the journal Remedial and Special Education. The paper is titled, “Systemic Transformation from the Ground–Up: Using Learning Lab to Design Culturally Responsive Schoolwide Positive Behavioral Supports.” It examines the implementation of Bal’s Culturally Responsive Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (CRPBIS) program.

A blog post by Kathleen T. Horning, the director of UW-Madison’s Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC), was published in November by The Conversation. The article is headlined, “How this year’s National Book Awards could change the face of children’s literature.” Horning writes, “in an era when 80 percent of the new children’s books published each year are exclusively about white characters, it’s significant that in 2014 we have four out of five award finalists about characters who are not."

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has received a landmark gift of $100 million from John and Tashia Morgridge, representing the largest single contribution from individual donors in the history of the institution. A 1955 graduate of the School of Education, Tashia Frankfurth Morgridge has maintained close ties with the school, serving on its board of visitors and, with her husband, sponsoring scholarships to support students preparing to become teachers. A retired special education teacher, she has been a volunteer teacher for students with learning disabilities.

After nearly a decade leading UW-Madison’s School of Education, Dean Julie Underwood announced today that she is stepping aside from her post in August 2015 to return to the faculty. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as dean of the School of Education for 10 years,” says Underwood. “I intend to remain active in UW life and continue working as a member of the faculty.” She has been dean since August 2005, with a short break in those duties from January to July 2009, when she served as UW-Madison’s interim provost.

A webinar about African Americans in STEM and the computing sciences featuring UW-Madison’s LaVar J. Charleston is now available online. The Sept. 9 talk, organized by the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL), was part of the CIRTLCast Series, which explores topics in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

Professor john powell, one of the nation’s leading experts on race, structural racialization and opportunity structures, will be facilitating a conversation with UW-Madison School of Education faculty, students and administrators from 5 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Powell will talk about structural racialization and the opportunity gap in education and how we can move towards a more equitable, shared future in our city and state.

The 2014 International Colloquium on Black Males in Education, a research gathering set to explore the global dynamics of black males in the educational pipeline, runs Oct. 1-4 at Morehouse College in Atlanta. The event’s lead organizer is Wisconsin’s Equity and Inclusion Laboratory (Wei LAB), an education research laboratory based out of the Wisconsin Center for Education Research at UW-Madison’s School of Education. The Wei LAB is directed by Jerlando F.L. Jackson, who is UW-Madison’s Vilas Distinguished Professor of Higher Education.

Nicola Rollock, the deputy director of the Centre for Research in Race & Education (CRRE) at the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom) and associate editor of the journal "Race Ethinicity & Education," has been named a Wei LAB Visiting Scholar and will speak at UW-Madison Thursday, Sept. 18. Rollock will provide a keynote address outlining her work on the Black middle classes and education in the United Kingdom from 2 to 4 p.m. The lecture is titled, “The Colour of Class: The Educational Strategy of the Black Middle Classes in the United Kingdom.”

Women and people of color working in higher education continue to bump up against glass ceilings despite years of effort to eradicate discriminatory employment practices, according to a new book edited by UW-Madison’s Jerlando F. L. Jackson. The book, “Measuring Glass Ceiling Effects in Higher Education: Opportunities and Challenges,” reveals the glass ceiling phenomenon to be more complex and harder to solve than previously thought.
