Wei LAB to present 6th Annual International Colloquium on Black Males in Education

Wisconsin's Equity and Inclusion Laboratory (Wei LAB) at UW-Madison and the Todd Anthony Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male at The Ohio State University are excited to announce the 6th Annual International Colloquium on Black Males in Education (ICBME) will be held in the globally diverse city of Toronto, Canada, Oct. 4-6. There will be a Pre-Colloquium Oct. 2-3.

"Toronto is frequently recognized as one of the world’s most diverse cities," states James L. Moore III, Executive Director of the Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male and Co-founder of ICBME. "Similar to other major cities in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean, many black males are not living optimally. A plethora of social and educational challenges hampers the overall quality of life for black men and boys, which mirrors other countries and cities around the world."

ICBME has become a signature event in the Wei LAB's portfolio around educational equity and community engagement.

"Based on feedback from previous locations, we put a considerable amount of thought into our current selection," says UW-Madison's Jerlando F.L. Jackson. "Toronto provides a unique backdrop to study and discuss black males’ experiences in education. We believe the complicated nature of 'blackness' in Toronto will provide an invaluable platform."

Jackson is UW-Madison's Vilas Distinguished Professor of Higher Education and is the director and chief research scientist of Wisconsin’s Equity and Inclusion Laboratory, which is housed in the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER). He is a faculty member with the School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis and is a Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE) faculty affiliate.

Each year, ICBME brings together top researchers, high-impact practitioners, funders, policymakers, students, and concerned citizens to engage in conversations regarding the state of affairs for black boys and men in education. Last year's ICBME in Bermuda heralded new events such as the locally-focused Policy Round Table and Colloquium Conversations, which attracted more than 300 local participants, as well as the recurring graduate school and college academies, which are designed to influence young students of color to pursue their college and graduate school goals. In total, more than 300 Bermudian and 200 International individuals participated in events that spanned over five days.

In the near future, the ICBME staff will provide details on event theme, registration, requests for proposals, keynote speakers and schedules. More details will be available soon on the ICBME website.
