Isthmus reports on ‘final solo for Jin-Wen Yu’

November 27, 2017

The Isthmus newspaper recently reviewed “Page 20,” a a contemporary, cross-cultural, multi-media dance concert from Jin-Wen Yu Dance and the UW-Madison Dance Department.

“Page 20” featured the award-winning choreography of Yu, a Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor who is celebrating 20 years with the School of Education’s Dance Department.

The Isthmus explains how the concert, which ran Nov. 16-20 at Lathrop Hall’s Margaret H’Doubler Performance Space, “provides snapshots of his choreography from the past, present and the future (a preview of a new work that will officially premiere in 2019). It is also your last chance to witness his artistry as a solo performer; Yu will continue to dance, but the program notes indicate he will no longer perform his solo works.”

In her review, headlined “Final solo for Jin-Wen Yu,” the Isthmus’ Katie Reiser reported that the whole evening nonetheless generated “excitement and curiosity about what Yu will come up with next.”

Yu’s new solo work, “Come to Dance” which he performed, “reveals all that is intriguing about him as a performer and dance maker.”

Reiser goes on to say that “his elegant grace and intensity is paired with impressive discipline and strength.”

Many strong performances were mentioned including those in “Big Page” where audiences got “to see five accomplished and strong male dancers, which is such a treat, because there is a scarcity of male dancers in Madison.”
