Madison Magazine’s 2018 M List spotlights several UW-Madison innovators in the arts

Madison Magazine earlier this month announced the selection of 31 forward-thinking artists and organizations for its 2018 M List -- which this year is dedicated to highlighting innovation in the arts.

And several of those being recognized have current close ties to UW-Madison’s School of Education.

“This year's M List recognizes innovation and creativity in the arts, and as such enchants us, challenges us and inspires us,” says Madison Magazine and WISC-TV Editorial Director Neil Heinen.

Madison Magazine logoPeople and organizations within the School of Education being recognized include:

• Chris Walker, an associate professor with the Dance Department who also is the artist director for UW-Madison’s First Wave Hip Hop Theater Ensemble.

• Simone Doing and Max Puchalsky, visual artists and community organizers who are master of fine arts candidates with the School of Education’s Art Department.

• Tandem Press, the highly regarded printmaking studio and gallery that’s housed within the Art Department.

• Tom Jones, a professor of photography with the Art Department.

• And the Arts + Literature Laboratory, which is home to the CASArt Madison program, which includes Faisal Abdu’Allah, a faculty member with the Art Department.

Madison Magazine reports: This year’s 2018 M List includes works that explore social justice and gender issues, to projects that spark creativity and imagination. The individuals and programs on this list have etched their own marks on Madison. They’ve created spaces for communities, connected people to ideas and created calls to action in order to evoke change locally and beyond.

This marks the sixth year of Madison Magazine’s M List. In past years, the prestigious award has honored professionals in the fields of health careeducationsocial innovationfood and technology.

Madison Magazine will publish a story in its November issue spotlighting this year’s M List artists and organizations. The issue will hit newsstands on Oct. 31.
