UW-Madison's Nicholas Hillman and Ellie Bruecker were quoted in an article from Inside Higher Ed about how the removal of a certain IRS tool for FAFSA applicants affects college students and application rates. Hillman is an associate professor with the School of Education's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, while Bruecker is a Ph.D. student with that same department.

The School of Education’s Beth Giles was recently elected to a three-year term on UW-Madison’s Academic Staff Executive Committee (ASEC). Giles is the School’s director of Education Outreach and Partnerships. The primary function of ASEC is to act as the day-to-day administrative executive committee for the Academic Staff Assembly and for the academic staff at large. More than 900 ballots were cast in this year’s ASEC election, which was held last month.

UW-Madison's Jill Barnes has received a three-year International Research Grant from the Alzheimer's Association. The 150,000 grant is to support research about "Brain blood flow in middle-aged adults at low and high risk of Alzheimer's Disease." The project is scheduled to start in July. Dorothy Farrar-Edwards, also with the Department of Kinesiology, is a consultant on the grant.

"Fair Play," a video game funded by a $1.6 million four-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is earning accolades for raising awareness about implicit bias in academic settings. Recently, the game’s founder, Molly Carnes, director of UW–Madison’s Center for Women’s Health Research, and Christine Pribbenow and Percy Brown, Jr. of the Wisconsin Center for Education Research, received the 2017 Adolphus Toliver Award for their collaborative work on “Fair Play.” WCER is housed within UW-Madison's School of Education.

UW-Madison's Kathleen Horning recently appeared on Wisconsin Public Radio’s “Larry Meiller Show” to talk about how the books we read as children can influence people as adults. Horning is the director of the School of Education's Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC). "I think a book can open up all sorts of worlds to a child. A child from a very young age who is exposed to books starts to find out what their own interests are," said Horning in the WPR interview.

The new student organization Diverse-OT is receiving a 2017 Bucky Award for Social Justice Advocacy, an honor sponsored by UW-Madison’s Multicultural Student Center. This honor recognizes a registered student organization that "makes a strong and lasting impact on the Madison campus and community by promoting social justice and equality. They also have made great strides to educate and empower others to act on these beliefs." Diverse-OT was created by Caitlin Rhoten and Toni Solaru, two students with the Department of Kinesiology’s Occupational Therapy Program.

UW-Madison alumna Deniece Dortch is ​starting an initiative at the University of Utah that's designed to support African-American doctoral students. Dortch received a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from UW-Madison’s School of education in 2016. Dortch today is the program manager for the African-American Doctoral Scholars Initiative and a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Utah. The African-American Doctoral Scholars Initiative will begin in the fall of 2017.

Data from UW-Madison's Nicholas Hillman, Ellie Bruecker, and Valerie Crespín-Trujillo was cited in an article in The Atlantic discussing the impact of ​recent changes to the FAFSA on student completion. Hillman is an associate professor with the School of Education's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis who researches higher education finance and policy, while Bruecker and Crespin-Trujillo are Ph.D. students in the department.

UW-Madison’s Shari Clark will receive the Wisconsin Athletic Trainers Association’s (WATA) Outstanding Educator Award. This honor recognizes a member of the WATA for their outstanding contribution to the education of athletic trainers and athletic training students in Wisconsin. The award will be presented at a luncheon on April 14 in conjunction with the WATA Annual Symposium in the Wisconsin Dells. Clark is an associate faculty associate with the Department of Kinesiology and the clinical education coordinator for its Athletic Training Program.

A new partnership between the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) and the University of Wisconsin–Madison seeks to combine the expertise of district educators and university researchers to improve education. MMSD and the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER), part of the university’s School of Education, have worked together for many years on specific problems and focused research projects. Now the organizations are joining together in a more permanent structure to support ongoing research collaboration via the Madison Education Partnership (MEP).

Student veterans and representatives with expertise in veterans issues will be taking part in an event on Saturday, April 22 that’s designed to help future health professionals better understand the history and trends of service-related injuries, different types of combat experiences, and more. The seminar is titled, “Military and Veteran Culture for Healthcare Professionals and Students,” and it is being co-sponsored by the organizations Veterans, Educators and Traditional Students (VETS), and Diverse-OT.

UW-Madison's Jerlando Jackson is showcased in a new video speaking about the National Science Foundation's INCLUDES Initiative. The INCLUDES Initiative aims to develop STEM talents from all sectors and underrepresented groups in society. Jackson is a collaborating investigator on an INCLUDES initiative called, "The Consortium of Minority Doctoral Students." This project examined three doctoral scholars programs to identify proven, high-impact and scalable recruitment, retention and mentoring strategies for increasing the number of Hispanic and Black/African American doctoral students in engineering, computing and information sciences programs.

UW-Madison’s Adaptive Fitness program will be hosting its annual open house event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 20. The open house will be held in Gym 6 of the UW Natatorium. There will be a keynote speaker every hour, and the winning poster in the Adaptive Fitness poster competition will be revealed. The Adapted Fitness open house is part of Disability Awareness Week, which is the week of April 17.

Kappa Delta Pi offers its members numerous networking opportunities and provides a range of resources throughout the various stages of one’s career. Founded in 1911, the honor society today has 40,000 members at more than 625 active chapters at universities and colleges in the United States and across the globe. And on May 4, UW-Madison’s School of Education will be establishing a new Kappa Delta Pi chapter during a luncheon ceremony at the Gordon Dining and Events Center. Membership in Kappa Delta Pi is comprised of university students in education, students seeking advanced degrees, professional educators, school administrators and education researchers.

​UW-Madison's Felice Amato will perform at the Banners and Cranks Festival at the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry in Storrs, Conn., on April 14-15. Amato is a Ph.D. candidate with the School of Education's Art Department. The Ballad Institute's current exhibit is "Banners and Cranks: Paintings and Scrolls in Performance." On April 14 and 15, there will be cranky and cantastoria performances created by puppeteers, musicians and artists. Amato will perform two cranky pieces, inspired from her research exploring the Lattimer Miners Massacre (1897) and the plight of miners now.

UW-Madison alumna Jennifer DeCubellis was featured by the StarTribune about her efforts leading a reform of Minnesota's child protection system. DeCubellis received her undergraduate degree in special education from the School of Education in 1992. Now, she's planning a $13 million overhaul of the child protection system in Hennepin County after taking over the top human services role one year ago. DeCubellis wants to focus on preventing abuse rather than waiting until after it happens to act.

UW-Madison alumna Laura Kalmes is founding a new private elementary school in Bloomington, Ill., called Bloom Community School, the Pantagraph reports. Kalmes earned a master’s degree in 2009 and a Ph.D in 2015, both from from the School of Education's Department of Educational Policy Studies. Kalmes also earned a minor with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Bloom Community School will serve about 50 students from grades K-5 in its pilot year. Its academic curriculum is project-based, and children will be taught in mixed-age classrooms.
