July 18, 2017

An exhibit from Nancy Rich, an alumna of UW-Madison’s School of Education, is currently on display at the Memorial Union’s Class of 1925 Gallery.

Rich’s exhibit is titled, "Afloat,” and it runs through July 28. Rich received her teaching certification in French from the School of Education in 1975. She also earned her master’s degree in counseling from the School of Education in 1977.

Rich explains that the major significance of the exhibit is that it highlights the small wooden boats along the northeast Atlantic coastline -- typically boats used by lobstermen and women to ferry to and from the docks and their craft more in deep water.  Over the past 10 years, Rich explains, these boats have essentially disappeared from the coastline, having been replaced by boats with little or no character (made of fiberglass, aluminum, rubber, or plastic).

Many of the images in “Afloat” are from Rich’s book, "Afloat on the Tide," published by Sheridan House in 2009.

The Capital Times newspaper recently posted a report about Rich’s exhibit titled: "Nancy Rich's photographs of old wooden boats keeps memories afloat."
