Alum Ward featured in Wisconsin State Journal's 'Know Your Madisonian'

July 18, 2017
UW-Madison's Earlise Ward was featured in the Wisconsin State Journal's "Know Your Madisonian" column about her work as a psychologist in Dane County helping black women cope with depression.

Earlise Ward
Ward received her Ph.D. from the School of Education's Department of Counseling Psychology in 2002. Ward today is a licensed psychologist and a professor in the UW-Madison School of Nursing. Ward's research particularly focuses on how depression affects older black women.

Even though African-Americans experience depression at the same rate as caucasians, Ward explained they are not seeking mental-health services to help.

"The preference is to have services or mental health counseling if you will that is more culturally tailored … (and) to have an African-American therapist. If that is not possible, and oftentimes it is not, to at least make sure the content of the treatment really focuses on African-American culture, African-American perspective," Ward told the Wisconsin State Journal.
