Brava magazine names alum Bonner as 'visionary' behind UW-Madison's Alumni Park

October 05, 2017
UW-Madison alumna Paula Bonner was recently featured in the September issue of Brava magazine as being the driving force behind creating Alumni Park before retiring from the university in October.

Alumni Park is holding its official grand opening on Friday, Oct. 6.

Bonner has worked for the university for more than four decades, serving as both president of the Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA) and chief alumni officer for the Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA). Bonner also received her master's degree from the School of Education's Department of Kinesiology in 1976. While earning her master's degree, Bonner also began a position with the UW Department of Athletics, serving as associate athletic director from 1977 through 1989.

Brava describes Bonner as the "visionary behind Alumni Park," and describes her "audible excitement" while walking through Alumni Park. She will continue putting the final touches on Alumni Park until she officially retires at the end of October.

"She's left a lasting legacy," WAA board member and School of Education Interim Associate Dean for External Relations Martha Vukelich-Austin told Brava. "That park will be here so long after any of us are around. Without her, it wouldn't have happened. She says it takes a village, but she deserves credit for this."

Post-retirement, Bonner told Brava she has no major plans besides writing to advocate for education.
