UW-Madison alumnus Patrick Daugherty was commissioned by the Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Courthouse to recreate Charles Willson Peale's 1772 portrait of George Washington in uniform as colonel of the First Virginia Regiment.

Daugherty earned his master of fine arts degree from the School of Education's Art Department and now he teaches art at Penn State Fayette. His work has been featured at the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Westmoreland Museum of American Art and more.

Daugherty's recreation took approximately 233 hours of painting to complete, reports a Penn State news story.

“I enjoyed the challenge of painting from Charles Willson Peale’s perspective and duplicating his style,” said Daugherty. “I gained more respect for the artist.”
