Alum Thao helping coordinate Hmong New Year program at Madison East High School

November 19, 2018

UW-Madison alumna Maixia Thao is helping to coordinate a Hmong New Year celebration and program at Madison East High School on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Thao earned her undergraduate degree from the School of Education, majoring in elementary education, in 2011. Thao is the Hmong language-cultural curriculum development teacher leader in the Madison Metropolitan School District’s Office of Multilingual and Global Education.

She is coordinating the event with May Choua Thao, East High School’s teacher of language arts, Hmong, and health.

This special event is being hosted by Madison East High School’s Southeast Asian Languages for Native Speakers classes levels I, II and III, in collaboration with Lake View Elementary School’s bilingual Hmong-English program, Black Hawk Middle School’s Hmong Heritage Language class, and Kennedy Elementary’s Hmong students.

This is the 13th year of this Hmong New Year program, which will run from 10 to 11:06 a.m. in East High School’s Margaret Williams Theater.

“This is My Story” is the central theme of this year’s celebration and students will act out short skits to showcase some of their experiences living in the U.S. as Hmong refugees.
