UW-Madison alum Alexander 'bleeding purple and gold' in leading LSU

November 23, 2018

In 1996, F. King Alexander earned his Ph.D. from the UW-Madison School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.

Now, after facing and triumphing over many challenges in working in higher education, Alexander has taken on his biggest one yet: being the first administrator to serve as both president and chancellor at Louisiana State University (LSU).

Having previously served as the president of Long Beach State University in California amidst budget cuts to higher education programs, Alexander is no stranger to adversity in the education system.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram recently visited with Alexander to look back at his past, while examining his current role leading LSU for the past five years.

Now at LSU over the past five years, Alexander continues to push for funding in higher education. While at Long Beach State, he helped developed the College Promise program and intends to start a similar program in for Louisiana State, which will help students get a fair chance at college education by making it more affordable.

Although Alexander and his wife, Shenette, miss Long Beach, Alexander is excited about setting an example with the College Promise program and working in Louisiana. He says, “This is a special place…The entire state of Louisiana is invested in LSU. Everybody is an LSU fan, and they let you know it.”
