Alum Charleston to be honored at Founders’ Day event in Madison

January 31, 2019

School of Education alumnus LaVar Charleston will be recognized with a 2019 Forward Under 40 Award at a Wisconsin Alumni Association Founders’ Day event in Madison on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Founders’ Day recognizes the very first classes at the University of Wisconsin, which were taught by Professor John Sterling on Feb. 5, 1849.

Charleston, who received both his master’s degree (2007) and Ph.D. (2010) from UW-Madison’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, is currently the assistant vice chancellor of student diversity engagement and success at UW–Whitewater. The Forward under 40 Awards recognize UW-Madison alumni under the age of 40 who exemplify the Wisconsin Idea — the belief that this public university exists to serve the public good.

Charleston will join Richard Halverson for a program titled, “Healing Communities through Conscientious Inclusion.” Halverson is an associate dean for innovation, outreach and partnerships with UW-Madison’s School of Education and a professor with the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.

Every year, Wisconsin Alumni Association chapters around the world host special Founders’ Day celebrations to commemorate this milestone. It’s a global occasion stretching from February until May. The season is filled with spirited events featuring accomplished Badgers from Madison to Singapore and beyond.

The Madison Founders’ Day celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. with a check-in, and the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Wisconsin Alumni Association, 650 N. Lake St.

Registration is required by Feb. 1. More details are available here.
