She formed Li Chiao-Ping Dance in 1990, which is one of the resident organizations at the Overture Center for the Arts. She previously co-directed the San Francisco-based Dziga Vertov Performance Group with Douglas Rosenberg from 1992-94. Renowned for her solo work, she is also well known for her multimedia and intergenerational productions.

Li’s new appointment begins July 1, with the Vilas Research Professorship providing a $50,000 annual research account to be used for research expenses. Professor Li, who recently served as department chair, plans to use these funds to continue her creative investigations which aim to push boundaries of traditional dance vocabulary, content and form, as well as explore issues of race, gender and ability.

Li will be recognized on Monday, May 11, during a Spring Vilas Reception in honor of the university’s Vilas Research Professors.
