Art Department’s Loeser named a Vilas Research Professor

April 27, 2015

UW-Madison’s Tom Loeser was recently selected as a Vilas Research Professor, which is among the highest honors bestowed by UW-Madison.

Loeser is an internationally recognized artist who has led the wood/furniture area of the UW-Madison Art Department within the School of Education since 1991.

His artwork has been included in more than 200 national and international exhibits since 1981. Loeser refuses to be constrained by the conventions of furniture making as he designs and builds one-of-a-kind functional -- and dysfunctional -- objects. His work is often carved and painted, and always based on the history of design and object-making as a starting point for developing new form and meaning.

Loeser’s new appointment begins July 1, with the Vilas Research Professorship providing a $50,000 annual research account to be used for research expenses. He plans to use his Vilas Research funding for an initial trip to Scandinavia to research historical and contemporary Scandinavian woodworking and design.

Loeser is being recognized on Monday, May 11, during a Spring Vilas Reception in honor of the university’s Vilas Research Professors.
