Chávez Moreno receives prestigious Barr Dissertation Fellowship

Laura C. Chávez Moreno was awarded the 2016-17 Arvil S. Barr Graduate Fellowship from UW-Madison’s School of Education for her dissertation research.

This award is given to a graduate student who is studying teaching, learning and reform. Chávez Moreno is a Ph.D. candidate with the School of Education’s No. 1-ranked Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

“I am so honored and humbled to have received this award,” says Chávez Moreno. “I am very grateful to the wonderful mentors who have helped me engage in scholarship that energizes me and that I hope contributes to the community.”

Chávez Moreno’s research, under the guidance of Professor Gloria Ladson-Billings, is centered on the areas of languages and literacies, and multicultural education. In her dissertation, Chávez Moreno is working with teachers and multilingual youth on a participatory action research project that centers on youth experiences in bilingual education. She’s examining how discourses frame and position youth of color, and how through critical inquiry and pedagogy, youth advocate for educational justice.

Chávez Moreno is from the borderlands of Arizona and Sonora, Mexico. She is active in the research community as a past graduate student council representative of AERA’s Division K. In Madison she serves as a member of the Latino Education Council and a past editor of La Prensa, a Spanish version of Madison’s Simpson Street Free Press.

Chávez Moreno is a co-founder of UW-Madison’’s Wisconsin Policy, Outreach and Practice (WiPOP), an organization designed to foster university and practitioner partnerships intended to amplify teacher voice in educational policy-making.

Her work has been published in the “Pennsylvania Language Forum,” “The Journal of Teacher Education,” and in the 5th edition of the “Handbook of Research on Teaching.”
