November 29, 2016

UW-Madison’s Matthew Hora will speak about his new book  “Beyond the Skills Gap” at a book launch event hosted by the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE) on Dec. 9.

Hora is a researcher with the Wisconsin Center for Education Research, which is housed within the School of Education. Hora is also an assistant professor of adult teaching and learning with the Department of Liberal Arts and Applied Studies.

Beyond the Skills Gap coverIn “Beyond the Skills Gap,” Hora, along with co-authors Ross Benbow and Amanda Oleson, challenge the policymaking that de-emphasizes the liberal arts model in attempting to re-align higher education to fit workforce needs.

The book draws from evidence from learning sciences, labor economics and interviews with 145 employers and educators throughout the state of Wisconsin and explores how experiential teaching across disciplines is vital in creating workers with diverse skill-sets they will need in life and work.

Hora will make policy recommendations for reforms to public higher education and the business community that will more adequately the community’s needs. UW-Madison’s Janet Batzli and Madison College’s Peter Dettmer will also speak at the event to discuss their current teaching and learning strategies in a complex modern labor market.

The event will take place on Friday, Dec. 9 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in room 159 of the Education Building.
