UW-Madison’s Sara Goldrick-Rab is the co-author of an article that recently appeared in The Washington Post’s Answer Sheet blog. The April 19 post is headlined, “What psychology tells us about student achievement – and how it is ignored.” It is co-authored by Geoffrey L. Cohen, a professor of psychology, education and business at Stanford University.

A project led by UW-Madison student James Xu and Professor Mitchell Nathan was recently awarded a Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Fellowship. This award provides a grant of $3,000 to the student and $500 to the faculty collaborator to offset the costs of the research project. Nathan is the faculty advisor for Xu’s project, “STEMbuds.”

UW-Madison’s Tom Loeser was recently selected as a Vilas Research Professor, which is among the highest honors bestowed by UW-Madison. Loeser is an internationally recognized artist who has led the wood/furniture area of the UW-Madison Art Department within the School of Education since 1991. Loeser’s new appointment begins July 1, with the Vilas Research Professorship providing an annual research account. He plans to use his Vilas funding for an initial trip to Scandinavia to research historical and contemporary Scandinavian woodworking and design.

UW-Madison’s Erica Turner wrote an op-ed for the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Get Schooled blog earlier this month. The commentary is headlined, “APS trial ends, but underlying problems, education challenges remain.” It examines the Atlanta Public Schools cheating trial that recently came to a close after a Fulton County (Georgia) jury convicted 11 educators of conspiracy to falsify students’ test scores. Turner has studied the meaning of the Atlanta cheating scandal to families and students in southwest Atlanta.

The UW-Madison Athletic Training Program was well represented at the annual Wisconsin Athletic Trainers Association Symposium in Milwaukee last week as 15 students from the university's AT program attended the meeting and participated in a number of educational and professional networking activities.

Li Chiao-Ping was recently selected as a Vilas Research Professor, which is among the highest honors bestowed by UW-Madison. She is the first artist to receive this honor. Li is a professor with UW-Madison’s Dance Department and is a Discovery Fellow at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. Li’s new appointment begins July 1, with the Vilas Research Professorship providing a $50,000 annual research account to be used for research expenses.

UW-Madison’s School of Education has published its annual “AERA 2015 Presentation Guide.” Faculty, staff and students from UW-Madison and across the University of Wisconsin System are participating in more than 200 events at this year's American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting in Chicago April 16-20. And this guide is an excellent way to get a sense of the depth, breadth and quality of education research taking place across UW-Madison's School of Education, and to learn when and how those efforts are going to be showcased at the AERA Annual Meeting.

William Reese was recently selected as a Vilas Research Professor, which is among the highest honors bestowed by UW-Madison. Reese is the Carl F. Kaestle WARF Professor of Educational Policy Studies and History. His new appointment begins July 1, and the Vilas Research Professorship provides a $50,000 annual research account to be used for research expenses. Reese plans to use these funds to help back graduate students and complete the research and writing of two books-in-progress.

UW-Madison's Clifton Conrad has written a book titled, “Educating a Diverse Nation.” He and co-author Marybeth Gasman examined a dozen minority serving institutions -– including historically black colleges and universities, tribal colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, and Asian American and Pacific Islander-serving institutions -- and found many practices at MSIs that are helping nontraditional students flourish. Conrad will be giving a free public talk about this topic on Thursday, April 23.

UW-Madison’s Nicholas Hillman is the co-author of a paper that was published earlier this month in the Journal of Student Financial Aid. The paper is titled, “Paying for Default: Change Over Time in the Share of Federal Financial Aid Sent to Institutions with High Student Loan Default Rates.” Hillman is an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, and an affiliate of the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE). The paper is co-authored by Ozan Jaquette of the University of Arizona.

UW-Madison’s Xueli Wang received the Barbara K. Townsend Emerging Scholar Award from the Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC). She was presented the honor at the CSCC annual conference in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday, April 10.

UW-Madison’s Maisha T. Winn earlier this month delivered a Visiting Scholars of Color Lecture at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. Her April 1 talk was titled, “Toward a Restorative Teacher Education in the Time of Mass Incarceration." Winn is UW-Madison’s Susan J. Cellmer Chair in English Education, and is a professor of language and literacy with the top-ranked Department of Curriculum and Instruction. A video of Winn’s presentation can be viewed on YouTube.

Robert Mathieu, a distinguished UW–Madison professor of astronomy and an international leader in advancing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) higher education, has been named director of the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER), UW–Madison School of Education Dean Julie Underwood announced. Mathieu was appointed interim director of WCER in August 2013. WCER is one of the oldest, largest and most productive education research centers in the world.

UW-Madison’s Brittany Travers is the lead author of a new publication that examines how the corpus callosum develops in autism from childhood into adulthood. Titled, “Atypical development of white matter microstructure of the corpus callosum in males with autism: a longitudinal investigation,” the paper appears in the journal, Molecular Autism.

UW-Madison’s Kate Corby was awarded funding through the Vilas Associates Competition and will use those dollars to research the history, practice and performance of the cham — the ancient meditation dances of Vajrayana Buddhism — which are an integral part of cultural life in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. The cham date back to the 8th century and are performed almost entirely by monks.

A research paper co-authored by UW-Madison’s Richard Halverson has been chosen for the Journal of School Leadership’s 25th anniversary special issue. Halverson’s paper, “The New Instructional Leadership: Creating Data-Driven Instructional Systems in Schools,” originally was published in the Journal of School Leadership in 2007. In commemoration of the journal’s anniversary, its former editors selected articles that best captured the theory, empirical research and practice critical to their time, and then considered their implications on modern-day systems and scholarship.

A paper by UW-Madison’s Andrea Harris was recently published in the Journal of American Drama and Theatre. The paper is titled, “Sur la Pointe on the Prairie: Giuseppina Morlacchi and the Urban Problem in the Frontier Melodrama.” Harris is an assistant professor with the Dance Department who is a dance historian and Certified Movement Analyst.

The Higher Education Video Game Alliance recently released a survey of 73 higher education video game design programs around the United States and it indicates that more women and minority participants are in these programs than computer science and other tech fields. A report in GamesandLearning.org explains how this survey “creates the first accurate snapshot of the field,” according to Alliance Executive Director and UW-Madison faculty member Constance Steinkuehler.
